Monitoring of Security Systems by an Accredited ULC Station

A professionally installed and monitored alarm system is your best protection against the risk of losses caused by a burglary. Within seconds of detecting unauthorized entry, the system notifies the monitoring station of an alarm. The signal is sent through the telephone line, dedicated circuit, internet or radio (cellular) transmitter.

Some systems utilize two of these technologies to achieve redundant reporting as recommended by the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada (ULC).  The alarm is detected  by an intrusion device such as a door sensor, motion detector or glass break detector, a personal safety device such as a smoke detector or wireless medical pendant, or a property safety device such as a water detector.

The monitoring station dispatches the appropriate responders, or agency. All activity is recorded for later review.

British Columbia is one of the few provinces in Canada that has a regulated security industry. All security workers in B.C., including monitoring station staff are required by law to have a criminal record check and hold a current security license. Monitoring stations in other areas are not subject to the same stringent requirements and personnel may not have any background checks.

Currently only British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia have regulated industries that require licensing by the government authority. Using a ULC monitoring station is important because the minimum standards set by Underwriters Laboratories of Canada are followed. The staff will be professionally trained and will have industry standard equipment.

Many home insurers offer discounts on annual rates if you have a monitored alarms system.  Check with your insurance company for their requirements.
