One of the most important functions a monitored alarm system can perform is to monitor special low-voltage smoke detectors.  The smoke detectors most people have in their homes were installed by electricians to alert the occupants of the home to fire. This is a fantastic life saving device, unfortunately if the fire occurs when there is no one at home, they do little to help reduce the damage to property or harm to pets.

Monitored smoke alarms operate 24 hours a day whether or not the alarm system is armed.  When a smoke alarm is sent to the station (there is a 30 second delay on the signal to the station to avoid false alarms caused by cooking smoke) they immediately dispatch the fire department whether you are home or not.
